What is a Career Academy?

A Career Academy is a school- within-a-school that links students with peers, teachers, counselors, and community partners in a structured academic and vocational setting. Career Academies combine academic and vocational curriculum into an integrated career theme, meeting both high school graduation and college entrance requirements. Academic curriculum will include project-based learning and structured-learning experiences that closely relate to their business and technology classes. Partnerships are developed with local employers, businesses and organizations to provide students with a stronger connection between school and work, and should culminate in a meaningful internship experience during their Senior year.

How Do I Enroll?

Students in their freshman year will be given a preliminary career survey. Students who strongly identify with the Business Management and Administration cluster will be given a more in-depth survey of their interests and abilities, after which time, they may fill out an application available through their Guidance and/or Career Counselor. Any student is eligible for our career survey process, and may take courses through the academy, but it is recommended that students begin the course sequence in their sophomore year. During the 2010-2011 school year, and each year thereafter, 25 students entering sophomore year will be admitted to the Career Academy. After successful completion of the sequential academy classes, seniors will earn a certificate from Lakewood High School’s Career Academy as well as a Lakewood High School diploma.
